QUALCOMM Applauds Passage of Definitive End-Date for Digital
Television Transition by U.S. Congress
Action to Enable Deployment of a Wide Range of Public Safety and Technology Services
SAN DIEGO - FEBRUARY 01, 2006 - QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), a
leading developer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other
advanced wireless technologies, today announced its support for the United States
Congress' approval of a statutory definitive end-date for the nation's television broadcasters
to transition to digital television spectrum. QUALCOMM has eagerly anticipated this
Congressional action, which mandates that television broadcasters transition their broadcast
operations from the 700 MHz analog band to new digital spectrum by February 17, 2009.
The transition will clear the 700 MHz spectrum which will then be used to support public
safety communications, provide additional broadband wireless access to urban and rural
areas and enable new broadcast multimedia services like those offered by QUALCOMM's
MediaFLO™ USA Inc. subsidiary. MediaFLO USA is deploying a nationwide media delivery
network that will use the Channel 55 spectrum.
"Congress' action today sets forth a clear and certain end to the digital television migration
process and we welcome this decision. This will certainly accelerate the deployment of
exciting new services like those offered by MediaFLO USA," said Gina Lombardi, president
of MediaFLO USA Inc. "The MediaFLO USA network is capable of delivering an
unprecedented set of wireless multimedia services, such as live streaming video, audio and
short format content, to mobile devices. This dramatic increase in new services is illustrative
of the advancements we can achieve with this spectrum post-transition and we look forward
to the opportunities this will present for the future of the wireless space."
MediaFLO USA is a wholly owned subsidiary of QUALCOMM Incorporated, offering
interactive wireless multimedia services to consumers in cooperation with U.S. wireless
operators. The nationwide network, based on QUALCOMM's FLO™ Technology and using
700 MHz spectrum, can support up to 800 minutes of Clipcasting™ per day, up to 20
streaming channels, up to 10 audio channels and numerous IP datacasting channels.
